Social media can overwhelm any business, but it’s also one of the most important channels for growing your audience and building a long-lasting relationship with your customers.

Know Your Purpose

If you don’t set goals and define what you want to achieve from your social media channels,  you’ll never really how well it’s performing or how it’s helping your business. Never get a Facebook or Instagram page ‘just because’. Your social media needs to have a reason for existing, everything you do on it should relate back to that original objective. Start by thinking where your target demographic hang out – which social media networks are they on? That’s where you should be too.

If you have a commerce business, perhaps it’s about showcasing new products, and driving website sales. Or if you have a service-based offering, it may be about building your brand as an industry expert. Know what you’re trying to achieve, set goals and objectives to work towards – otherwise you will likely see little return and feel like you’re wasting time and effort.

Social media is about making a connection with your target audience. Consumers are wanting to make more informed decisions about their purchases – meaning customers or potential followers want to know the people who are behind a company. Connecting with them on a personal level will enhance the influence of your brand. However, it is also important for a brand to choose its Facebook and other representatives wisely. Anything unprofessional on your personal profile can deeply affect your brand.

Keep It Relevant

Ensure your posts are always relevant to your customer, and remember, quality beats quantity.

  • TikTok – The fastest growing social media network. Great if your audience skews younger, and you have the resources to make lots of good video content.
  • Pinterest – Similar to Instagram, Pinterest is highly visual. Although it’s limited to static images, it can be highly effective at driving traffic back to blogs and websites.

Stay Active

Social media is never ever a ‘set and forget’, even if you do schedule posts weeks in advance. What happens if a customer or potential lead gets in contact with you about a product or a service? In today’s fast paced digital world, people expect a prompt response. If not, they will simply move on to your competitor. So, ensure someone is responsible for the daily checking of your social media inbox and any comments that require a response.

While social media is friendlier and more conversational than traditional marketing, it is still about promoting your business.  So naturally you want to put your best foot forward.
